Artist Statement: RAÍCES 2022
This curation is part of a group exhibition directed by RotterdamPhoto. It’s called PLANETHUMAN. Inevitably, this theme pushed me to explore two big questions: What is PLANET? And what is HUMAN? A project originally set for exhibition in 2020, I’ve had a lot of time to think about those two words.
The world we live in has fallen into chaos. We could talk about pandemics, wars, climate, inequality, food, religion, amongst many others. Humanity has so many problems, but how do we come up with solutions? This selection of images is an interpretation inspired by the surrealist movement. It’s a dream-like world.
I’ve worked from a woman’s perspective, showing different possibilities of what reality could mean. You can read into the subject of the image, its surroundings, or its place in history.
Colour is important in this curation. I gravitated towards a warm palette because it evokes humanity in all its forms. Red lets us express passion, sexuality and joy. But we’re also in awe of its ability to convey danger and pure fury. It’s this tension that makes life interesting.
Taken from Spanish, ‘RAÍCES’ means roots. We, as humans, are all from different places with different beliefs. But despite our origins, we live and grow together on the same planet.
